Taewook Kang received his BS and MS degrees from SNU and worked as a circuit designer at Silicon Minus for three years. He then obtained his PhD from the University of Michigan. Since 2021, he has been working at Apple in the RF field as a mixed-signal circuit designer.
Smart IoT sensor ICs are driving innovation in various fields, from healthcare to speech recognition. In our first paper, we present a fully integrated, implantable pH sensor that employs a unique differential sensing technique to compensate for unstable fluid potential. To achieve this, we developed a novel REFET fabrication process and proposed a drift compensation technique that cancels gate leakage, reducing drift by a factor of 100. The ability to accurately monitor pH levels in vivo has numerous potential applications in the biomedical field, including detecting early signs of disease and monitoring drug efficacy.
In our second paper, we focus on the acoustic beamformer for the noise suppression, a crucial component of Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) in devices such as AirPods, cell phones, and smart speakers. We introduce a new low-power adaptive beamforming technique that actively adjusts the direction of arrival (DOA) estimation and suppresses varying noise sources. Additionally, we propose a multi-mode ADC and beamformer that allows the system to adaptively adjust its power consumption based on signal conditions, making it more energy-efficient.
